Actor John Abraham is known for his intense performances and commitment to projects with a strong social or political message, a trend he continues with his upcoming film ‘Tehran’. In a candid interview ahead of the film’s release, Abraham delved into the personal experiences that have shaped his career choices. Read on to know more.

John Abraham talks about the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi

In a conversation with India Today ahead of the release of his upcoming film ‘Tehran, the actor recalled being a young boy when he first learned about the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. “I saw my mom draw the curtains and asked her in Gujarati, ‘Mummy, Suthayu, what happened?’ She told me, ‘Rajiv Gandhi was killed last night.’ I remember seeing his lotus shoes, white kurta, and his face… it impacted me deeply,” John said. The moment left a lasting impression, though he didn’t fully grasp why his family was mourning so profoundly at the time.

John Abraham on taking on political scripts without fear

Although John insists he is “apolitical” in real life, he has never shied away from taking on politically sensitive stories on screen. He pointed to Madras Cafe as a defining project in his career, crediting director Shoojit Sircar for bringing the film to life. “I know what I am getting into with my eyes open,” John said, reflecting on both ‘Madras Cafe’ and ‘Tehran’. He added that his choices are guided by a belief in calculated risks, quoting the management principle: “The higher the risk, the greater the profit.” For John, the “profit” is not just commercial, it’s about having a voice, telling important stories, and doing so responsibly.

About ‘Tehran’

John’s next outing, ‘Tehran’, directed by Arun Gopalan, will premiere directly on OTT on August 14. The film, though fictional, is based on true events and explores a gripping international political scenario intertwined with human emotions. John stars as ACP Rajeev Kumar alongside Manushi Chhillar, Neeru Bajwa, and Madhurina Duli.
