Leo Woodall will star opposite Sydney Sweeney in a new film adaptation of Edith Wharton’s novel ‘Custom of the Country.’ Studiocanal and Charles Finch’s Rabbit’s Foot Films are backing the project, with Josie Rourke directing from her own adapted screenplay. The film brings Wharton’s classic story of ambition and social climbing to the big screen, with Sweeney leading the cast as Undine Spragg.

As reported by Deadline, Sweeney plays Undine Spragg, described as “a fiercely ambitious woman from the Midwest, who strives for the social heights of turn-of-the-century New York.” Armed with “beauty, daring and sheer force of will,” Undine takes on an entrenched elite. The story follows her as she courts controversy and pushes boundaries “until love and fortune align.”

Sweeney will also produce the film alongside Charles Finch and Monumental Pictures’ Owen. Studiocanal will fully finance the project. The company plans a theatrical release across its territories, including the UK, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Poland and Benelux. Studiocanal will also launch worldwide sales at the European Film Market in Berlin.Nina Gold serves as casting director and is assembling the supporting ensemble around Sweeney and Woodall. Overseeing the project for Studiocanal are EVP Global Production Ron Halpern, U.S. Chief Creative Officer Shana Eddy-Grouf and VP Development and Production Isobel Carter.
