A revered Hindu rite known as Shraadh puja is carried out by the descendants of the deceased to honor and show respect for them. In Hindu religion, Shraadh Puja is very important and is mostly done during Pitru Paksha. In order to receive the heavenly blessings of their ancestors for a happy life, Hindus worship their ancestors during this period. This year, on Sarva Pitru Amavasya, which is called last day of Pitru Paksha will be observed on September 21, 2025. However, there will be a solar eclipse on Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

According to astrological significance, eclipses are seen as periods of time during which the influence of negative energy is amplified. Celestial body alignment upsets the natural equilibrium, endangering both human and cosmic life. Consequently, it is believed that visiting temples or engaging in spiritual activities during this time may draw bad energy.

How to perform Puja on Sarva Pitru Amavasya?

Invite Brahmins

One must invite brahmins at home and serve them sattvik food, give them clothes and shoes.

Perform Tarpanam

Tarpanam is chanting certain holy mantras and serving water infused with black sesame seeds and that can only be done under the guidance of priest.

Chant Mantra

Chanting mantras during Shraadh Puja or Pitra Paksha might increase the ritual’s efficacy and the advantages of Sarva Pitru Amavasya Pooja. Pitru Gayatri Mantra should be chanted during this ceremony.

Offer water to peepal tree

According to the Garuda Purana, the peepal tree is believed to be the home of Lord Hari and the ancestors. To put an end to Pitra Dosh, people must offer water and worship the peepal tree on this Sarva Pitru Amavasya day. The water should be mixed with milk and sugar.

One must light a diya with desi ghee under peepal tree and perform puja to ancestors.

Do not cook or eat during Surya Grahan

Cooking and eating are avoided during the eclipse (grahan) period. Essential foods can be prepared either before or after the eclipse. Eating or cooking at this period is believed to have detrimental consequences on individuals and families.

Pind daan

One must perform pind daan on specific places under the guidance of priest in order to get rid of Pitru Dosha. Typically, rice balls and other foods cooked with milk, ghee, and sesame seeds are served. These offerings are given to deceased souls or made to Brahmins and stored in a hallowed place.

Take holy bath

People are suggested to visit various places where they can take a holy bath in Ganga water.
